The "Mix"!

My blog today is inspired by a visit I had with a client of mine on Friday.

I have worked with this client before on several different projects over the years, but I had forgotten how her home makes me feel every time I step foot in her door. The first thing I want to do is put my feet up on the time worn, old leather ottoman, and have her go fetch me a scotch on the rocks. I love that feeling!,(not the being served, although that would be nice) but the feeling of walking into someones home and sinking down into the feather filled couch and never getting up because your so comfortable, relaxed and at ease. I started to think afterwards what is it about her home that always makes me feel that way? Is it the worn old wood floors? Or the beat up leather club chairs that looked like they stepped out of a Ralph Lauren ad? How about the persian carpets, surrounded by antique pine cupboards and sideboards, that you know have been knocked around a few times by a growing family, of course only adding to the character. Then in the background I hear a faint tick, tick, tick, of an ancient clock perched on top of the mantle over the brick fireplace. But wait I'm not done.... suddenly I turn around and I'm hit with a larger then life modern abstract painting. I have at that moment come to the conclusion that it is the "mix" or here it comes that dirty overused designer word "eclectic"(yuck I know.) There really is no other way to describe it though, it is, what it is,the mix of styles and elements that when put together make a house feel lived in and special like it has been collected over time.A home with character, setting it apart from others.

In the past two homes I've built, I have sold all my furniture, looking forward to having a clean slate.I have now decided that I don't want to do that anymore. Filling a home with belongings isn't accomplished overnight,it takes time (and a lot of it) and patience. When I buy pieces now I want to feel that I will love that piece no matter where I put it ,or that it can serve more than just one purpose depending on what I choose to use it for. And that is exactly what I felt at my clients home,a sense that her pieces have been in the family for years and have served many different functions.I bet each piece has a story to tell as well.

I think a well designed home needs to have pieces like this in order for it to feel like a home, something that can't,( in my opinion anyways),be achieved by filling your home with all new furniture. The" mix".  I think it's something I will from now on aspire to continue to achieve! I think I'm getting old.

Here are four designers who's work I greatly admire, each one always achieves the "mix," in every home they design, even if it is on a different level.

Enjoy.

1.) Brad Ford.

2.) James Huniford.

A Grand Front Entrance!!!!!

How important is the front entrance in your home,to you?

No matter what style of home I have built over the years, the front of my home has always been the most important to me. It's where the first impression is made, and therefore should be a warm and welcoming one.

 How can this be accomplished?

#1 The front door!....
Spend a good portion of your budget on the front door. To me it's the deal maker or breaker, so make it impressive.

#2 Paint the front door a great color!.....
If you can't afford an expensive door then why not paint the one you have a great color.Whatever color you choose make sure it's something entirely different then any other color on the exterior, this way it will really pop! (Unless of course you opt for wood)

#3 Beautiful lighting!......
Make sure you take your time to find something special and well suited to the style of your home.
Try putting these lights on dimmers, it offers a nice ambiance when people are arriving at your home at night. If you happen to have a large covered entrance, think about a outdoor chandelier,it's a beautiful look that's sure to get you the compliments!

#4 How about a mat or a beautiful outdoor carpet......
It offers a welcoming feel, and is a great way to bring in and inject some color or pattern

#5 Last but not least........
Greenery or flowers in beautiful pots. Why not choose something that has a beautiful shape or texture.

So there you go 5 easy ways to bring some pizzaz to your front entrance. Hopefully your first impression will be a lasting one.

Have a great weekend!

Heather Ross!!!!!!!

This past weekend I had the privilege of finally meeting Heather Ross in her beautiful store in Vancouver, "Heather Ross" [in house]
(The most beautiful Heather Ross herself!)

Heather's store is a feast for the eyes and a delight to the senses. The Atelier Gallery/ Boutique showcases Heather's art (which by the way is breath taking) hanging proudly above her one of a kind finds that are so beautifully displayed.
Meeting and talking to Heather made me feel as if I have known her my whole life. She is warm and gracious and her passion for what she does was clearly evident in our conversation.

I highly respect Heather. In a economy that see's everything massed produced,Heather has stayed true to who she is,not succumbing to the pressures of being tantamount or equal to other businesses around her, instead she pours her heart into the one of a kind pieces we come to her store to find.

Heather's affection for her possessions is evident in the stories that come with each piece, and that alone is what makes me so besot with this beautiful boutique. I will definitely be making this a regular stop from now on, and I hope that the next time your in Vancouver you will too!
P.S. Heather's getting ready for a buying trip to Italy!!!!!

Catch Heather at 1525 West 6th ave Vancouver B.C. She is open Tuesday-Saturday 11-5 or by appointment. You can also be come a fan of Heather's by liking her on Facebook ( and who wouldn't )

If you mention MAY PROMO the next time your in visiting Heather you will receive 20% off your purchase (in effect for the whole month of May) I strongly urge all of you to do so, you wont be disappointed, I promise.( The last 2 weeks of May, Heather will be open from 12-5)

Here is a little something I picked up for myself. I'm in love with the shape.
Sometimes it's the smallest things that give you the most pleasure.
This is the equally beautiful box the vase came in!

Enjoy.

color,color,color!!!!!

Well were at that time of year again, where everyone and there grandmother is starved for some color in there world and who can blame them after a fairly gray winter. This season the trend is really, any color goes, whether its electric brights or pretty pastels. No matter what, there is bound to be something out there to suit every ones color mood. So how do you plan on using color in your home this season?

How about a new color for the walls of that room you've grown bored of. By now,we all know how inexpensive paint is and yet extremely effective at instantly updating a space. Maybe it's not a whole room but rather a feature wall, like the second picture. How fun is that!
dining room walls Wyth Blue (HC143) Benjamin Moore
Feature wall Royal Flush (2076-20) Benjamin Moore.

If painting is not for you, then why not add a throw pillow or two, either in a solid color or a bold print. There is a plethora of sites to choose from these days, to buy pillow covers from, my current favorite is Etsy.com,just punch in the color and size your looking for and sit back and enjoy the choices. These are some of my current favorites.
Regency velvet
Kelly Wearstler for Ground works
Dwell Studio

Honey Pie Designs Etsy.com

How about some beautiful new accessories to adorn the tops of your furniture such as vases, colorful bound books, candles and the list goes on. It's amazing what one small colorful piece in a room can do.

And last but not least if your anything like me a big color coward you can always opt for beautiful seasonal flowers.( although I'll probably just buy all white.... boring I know)

No matter what you decide or how you choose to bring these colors in I hope you enjoy your season of color.

Have a great weekend everyone!
